CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police hope an apartment security camera will be able to tell them who shot a 21-year-old UNC Charlotte student.

The confrontation occurred at The Flats apartment complex off Mallard Creek Church Road around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

“I heard the gunfire.  We thought it was just someone dropping something, then we heard the sound of sirens," said Chris Portis, an apartment resident.

Police said John Borek was shot in the neck.  He is currently at Carolinas Medical Center in serious condition.

The apartment complex is filled with college students, and prior to the incident there had never been any trouble.

“It’s kind of scary people getting shot near campus area," said Jeff Faille, a junior at UNCC.

Police say the suspects drove a silver or green Toyota Yaris. So far the victim has not been able to help officers much. They say Borek can’t talk, and that’s why they hope the videotape can help.

For Monica Glick the shooting was too close for comfort.

“We’re pretty upset about it.  When I watch the news, my window is right there.  I'm definitely not living here next semester," said Glick.

Until officers can make an arrest, students like Katiska Semper say they will be careful.

"I don’t want to walk around scared.  I don't want to live like this.  I’m just going to be a little more cautious, pay attention to my surroundings a little more,” said Semper.
