CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Chantal Nyinawumuntu is now battling from her life in a Charlotte Hospital Bed after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed the 5500 block of Albemare Road this weekend.

"She is not doing well.  She is in the hospital right now and her legs are completely broken and she got a problem with her neck," said Concessa Nyinawumuntu, her older sister.

Investigators say witnesses saw the driver make a U-turn and drive off early Sunday morning.  Police are looking for a red or burgundy SUV, possibly a jeep Cherokee with front-end damage.

The siblings have known plenty of suffering in their life. They are refugees from Congo and have lived in a Rwanda Refugee camp with their grandmother for 16 years.

"Their parents were murdered in Congo during the war they came to refugee camp and lived with their grandmother," said Concessa.

Although she would like to know who struck her sister that is not her biggest concern.

"Even if they get him it's not going to make her sister become normal, like her legs and stuff.  So, she's just thinking about her sister," said an interpreter.

If anyone has information on this crime you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
