CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are searching for a brazen robber who tried to snatch a woman's purse in an uptown parking deck.
It happened Monday morning at a parking deck on Church Street across from Discovery Place.
Police say the man approached the woman from the front, grabbed her arm and tried to drag her away.
"It's very concerning because I park there pretty much every day," said Debra Tourloukis, who works uptown.
The victim dropped to the ground -- collapsed. Police say it's a strategy that might have helped.
"I guess, I think, if he really just wanted her purse it was a good way for him to take the purse and leave and hopefully not do anything violent to attack her," said Meredith Perry, who works uptown.
"In this case it does seem that her actions helped to draw attention to this situation and draw his attention away from what he was trying to do," said Capt. Jeff Estes with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Officers said a witness saw the attack from an upper level of the deck and yelled.
"We believe that helped scare the subject off," Estes said.
The man stole the woman's wallet and fled. The victim was not physically injured.
Officers have interviewed the witness and are reviewing surveillance video from the area in hopes of getting a look at the robber.
