MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Investigators are still trying to figure out what started an apartment fire that left 22 families looking for a place to stay, and caused more than half a million dollars in damage.
Home video shows flames 30 feet high shooting out of the rooftops of the Matthews apartments.
“Horrible. I’ve never seen something like that,” said Karen Servano, who was having dinner with her dad and brother when the fire started. “We were just eating and the alarm started sounding. We were like, ‘What is that?’”
Thursday morning, as investigators were back on the scene to try to determine what caused the fire, Karen was still wearing the same clothes.
“It’s been a really long night and day, waiting to see if they’re going to give us an apartment or find out what’s going to happen.”
Some of the units were a complete loss. Karen is still waiting to see how badly her family’s unit was damaged.
The Red Cross is helping her family, and others. They tell NBC Charlotte most will be moved to other apartments within the same complex.
