CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, Carol Fowler, says the Federal Elections Commission has launched an investigation of the surprising winner of the U.S. Senate Democratic primary, Alvin Greene.
The issue is where the unemployed Greene came up with $10,000 he had to pay to officially file to run for office.
"When you run for office, you have to tell how much money you receive, when you got it and how you spent it. He has done none of that," said Fowler.
Fowler says there may be other investigations launched as well to see if Greene, who faces a felony charge of obscenity from last November, was a Republican "plant" set up to embarrass the Democratic Party.
Fowler said, "I do believe that more than one agency is looking into it. Both federal and state."
Friday afternoon, the South Carolina State Elections Commission certified the results of Tuesday's primary, including Greene's stunning win over his Democratic rival Vic Rawl.
NewsChannel 36 was unable to reach Greene for comment.
