HICKORY, N.C. – Two sanitary sewers experienced overflow Wednesday because of the heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida, but city officials say water remains safe.

The first sanitary sewer overflow discharge occurred at the Northeast Waste Water Treatment Plant influent pump station on Cloninger Mill Road at approximately 4:15 a.m. consisting of approximately 78,000 gallons and was caused by the heavy rain that overloaded the system. The overflow was discharged into Falling Creek of the Catawba River basin.

The second discharge occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. when the City was notified of a sanitary sewer overflow in the 1500 block of 10th Street Place, NW consisting of approximately 34,500 gallons and was caused by the heavy rains that overloaded the system.  The overflow was discharged into Horseford Creek of the Catawba River basin.

The Mooresville Regional Office of the Division of Water Quality was notified and says water remains safe.
