HILTON HEAD, S.C -- A Mooresville woman vacationing with her family escaped what could have been a tragedy.

As NBC affiliate WSAV reports, Kimberly Popp was standing in shallow water off of Hilton Head, S.C. when a shark attacked her.

"We were right in front of the lifeguard. I was like knee-deep in the water, and all of a sudden I felt this thump. That’s the best way to describe it on my leg,” she says.

Popp hit the shark until he unclasped his jaws from around her foot. She then ran to the sand.

Shey says the adrenaline kept her from feeling any of the pain until later.

Popp is recovering. She has no broken bones to speak of but there are stitches around her foot and she walks with crutches.

The type of shark that bit her is unknown.
