CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A woman is in a hospital after being shot by her ex-boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself after a standoff with police.

Police say the standoff began at about 12:30 a.m. Friday inside an apartment on North Wendover Road.

The woman, who is pregnant, was shot in the leg. Her young daughter was also home at the time of the shooting, but she was not injured.

When police arrived at the scene, the woman was able to get out of the apartment, and then the man barricaded himself inside.

SWAT officers were called to the scene and entered the apartment, where they found that the man had shot himself to death.

The case remains under investigation.
