TROUTMAN, N.C. -- An Iredell County teacher assistant police say assaulted a handicapped student has resigned from her position.

Troutman police charged Sonjia Daye with assault on a handicapped child. Police were contacted by the victim's school personnel after facial bruising was discovered on the victim's face.

During the course of the investigation, Daye was identified as the main suspect.

Daye was a teacher assistant and the after school caregiver for the Iredell/Statesville County School System before resigning.

She has been with the school system since 2006 and worked at Lakeshore Elementary School.
