HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Friday afternoon investigators spoke with the teen driver accused of crossing the center line and causing the accident that claimed the life of a young teacher on her way to school.
Huntersville police tell NewsChannel 36 the driver of that Dodge Ram pickup truck can't explain what caused him to veer into oncoming traffic. But they're hoping as his injuries heal, his memory will return. Otherwise, there may never be an answer to that question.
Meanwhile, Pastor Dave Kulp with the Uptown Church says, "People are just pouring out scripture and prayers for Aimee's family."
Aimee Powell is the young teacher who died several hours after the crash Thursday morning.
He says Powell accomplished much in her life, including changing countless lives.
"Everyone knew Aimee and really loved her," said Kulp.
Powell grew up learning both English as Chinese as her parents worked as missionaries in Taiwan. Friends say she was helping others as soon as she could walk. She loved teaching, says Kulp, who describes her as "a passionate teacher." He says she especially loved her job at South Lake Christian Academy in Huntersville.
Powell was less than a minute from the school Thursday morning when she was hit.
"It comes as a surprise to us," said Kulp.
He gave the heartbreaking news to Powell's parents who were still in Taiwan.
"Aimee always sought family wherever she was because her family was always so far away helping people all over the globe," Kulp said.
Kulp says Powell recently wrote that she finally felt settled for the first time in her life. She described it as wonderful, but felt God would soon bring change and she put her trust in Him.
"If you summed up Aimee's life, that's what she did. She pointed others to Jesus," said Kulp.
For Powell's friends, their solace is in her faith. As Kulp puts it, 'Our comfort is that it didn't come as a surprise to God."
Dozens of people have emailed NewsChannel 36 expressing their sorrow and leaving their prayers for the Powell family.
Powell's parents arrived in Charlotte Friday evening. They had not started making funeral arrangements at that point.
