TEGA CAY, S.C. -- There has been another sewage spill into Lake Wylie from a sewer line in Tega Cay.
It happened over the long Labor Day weekend and some residents are upset because they say they were not notified by the water company, Utilities Inc., of the spill.
Gus Matchunis and his family were enjoying the weekend on the lake but he said they all smelled something funny.
“When I got up to my house there was a pumper truck. I walked up and asked the gentleman what was going on and he said there had been a spill,” Matchunis said.
He took pictures as work crews cleaned up around a manhole cover. What bothered him was that they were wearing protective gear. One picture shows two other kids in the water nearby while the crew was working.
“They were protecting themselves but my kids were swimming in the water. That really bothered me,” said Matchunis.
Rick Gaskins of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation said Utilities Inc. should have moved faster to stop the leak from reaching the lake.
“Certainly if you got your guys out there cleaning it up and you see kids swimming, you ought to get them out of the water,” Gaskins said.
Tom Oakley of Utilities Inc. said in a statement, “(we) are still gathering all the facts to finalize our investigation of what took place.”
