CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are searching for a man they said shot three women in North Charlotte Wednesday.

It happened around 6 p.m. in the Dillehay Court neighborhood at the intersection of Pine Street and West 28th Street.

According to witnesses, dozens of children were playing in the community when the man opened fire. Police have said the suspect’s intended target was another man, but instead the bullets hit three women standing in a nearby yard.

One of those victims is just 15 years old. Police said the women were all innocent bystanders.

“He was just shooting in broad daylight like it was the wild wild west or something,” said Jalisa Walker, who ran outside to get her younger brother and sister after hearing the first gunshot.

Smitty Horne also went outside after hearing gunshots. His two children were playing across the street, just a few feet away from the scene.

“I ran outside to scoop up my kids. I saw him running. He let off more shots--pow, pow, pow--and ran that way. I heard the girl scream, saw the other fall to the ground,” said Horne. “I can’t believe he was out here shooting like that during the day when kids are here. That could’ve been my kids. He better hope police find him before I do.”

The bullets also hit a gas line. Firefighters repaired it on scene without incident.

People in the neighborhood said the shooting started over a card game. Authorities have not released any information about the gunman at this time.

All of the victims are expected to recover.
