CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police arrested 15 people on charges of driving while intoxicated at two overnight checkpoints in uptown Charlotte.

Officers from various agencies filed 88 total charges during the checkpoints at East 7th Street, near McDowell Street, and at East 5th and Caldwell streets, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sgt. David Sloan said.

Charges also included 14 for driving while license revoked, 19 for having no operator's license, two for drug possession and one for alcohol possession by an underage person, Sloan said.

The checkpoints were part of the annual statewide “Booze It and Lose It” campaign Aug. 20 to Sept. 6.

The campaign tries to stem the number of alcohol-related crashes. In 2009, 11,304 alcohol-related crashes happened in North Carolina, resulting in 394 fatalities and 8,791 injuries, according to the Governor's Highway Safety Commission in Raleigh.

During last year’s statewide campaign, officers issued 105,370 traffic and criminal citations, the commission reported.
