CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Lincoln Heights neighborhood is finally getting a brand new park.
The hope is to have it built in three days in the 1800 block of Catherine Simmons Avenue.
All the work is being done by volunteers who wanted to give back as part of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Empty land owned by the county and unused is now about to become a new city park. The idea is to commemorate 9/11.
"We wanted to do something meaningful to commemorate 9/11 and decided wouldn't it be great if we could build a park and a playground," said Bob Young, Associate Director of Hands On Charlotte.
Many of the volunteers were from Home Depot.
"Our associates live here. They live in the community, and they want to give back to the community,” said Mark Ortiz of Home Depot.
"It has been a needed project that has finally come to fruition," said H.C. “Woody” Woodward with Partners for Parks.
It will make a lot of people happy, he added.
"A lot of people. Not just the neighborhood leaders, but the kids who will be able to enjoy it and able to walk to it,” Woodward said.
"Over the next three days all of these volunteers will keep working as long as they can and the plan is to dedicate the new park on Sunday afternoon.
