ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Two Winthrop University basketball players are charged with criminal sexual conduct, accused of assaulting a woman on campus.
The players, 20-year-old Robert Keith Dreher II and 21-year-old Julius O. Francis, are charged with criminal sexual conduct. Winthrop officials said they have been suspended from the team indefinitely.
A 19-year-old woman says the players assaulted her inside a residence hall on campus on April 17.
"After reviewing our findings from an extensive investigation, warrants were issued on Wednesday, and the two males being charged reported to our office, where they were placed under arrest," said Winthrop Police Chief Frank Zebedis.
Both players appeared in court Wednesday afternoon. A judge set bail at $40,000 for each man. Dreher posted bond shortly before 4 p.m.
Francis, who is from Nigeria, was asked to surrender his passport. He was being transferred to the York County Detention Center.
University officials issued this statement: "Winthrop students are expected to abide by all laws of the city, state and nation, as well as the student conduct code and the rules of any student organizations with which they are involved. Any students found to be in violation of the law would be subject to separate penalties from the respective geographic legal jurisdiction involved, from Winthrop and from respective student organizations."
