HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- All lanes are open again on southbound Interstate 77 in Huntersville, but an early-morning wreck involving a truck has caused huge traffic backups in northern Mecklenburg and southern Iredell counties.
Authorities were able to reopen the left southbound lane of I-77 shortly after 7:30 a.m.
That lane had been closed since a tractor-trailer carrying a load of paper wrecked about 3 a.m. near mile marker 26, a short distance north of the Birkdale exit. According to police reports, a car made a quick lane change in front of the truck, and the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The truck overturned, landing in the median. Some of the truck’s load was spilled across the roadway.
With the lane closure and the onlooker delays, southbound traffic is backed up. At 7:40 a.m., the backups stretched about 8 miles. Traffic also is reported to be very heavy on the alternate routes -- Statesville Road and Old Statesville Road.
