CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One man was killed when a wrong-way driver collided with him on I-77.

The wreck happened around 3 a.m. at the state line.

Troopers say the driver of an Acura entered the northbound lanes of the interstate at the Carowinds Boulevard exit and went south. The victim, the driver of a Civic, was headed northbound when the Acura hit him head on. The victim has been identified as Robert Goulding, 26. Goulding died at the scene.

Medics airlifted the causing driver, 21-year-old Austin Cason, to CMC Main, where he is listed in serious, but stable condition. Troopers are still investigating but say alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Charges are pending.

The crash partially blocked traffic but all lanes have since reopened.
