CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Harris Teeter may be getting the headlines, but the numbers show that even after its merger with Kroger, Food Lion will still be the dominant supermarket chain in North Carolina, at least according to number of stores.
NBC Charlotte gathered state-by-state data on six different supermarket chains and food retailers. Click on a state to see how many of each type of store it has, or use the drop down menu on the left to see where each company has its stores nationwide.
Note that each chain has stores with different names. Kroger operates in the west under names like Fred Meyer and Ralphs, and Wal Mart also includes Sam’s Clubs and others.
That said, Kroger, Whole Foods and Wal Mart are spread out nationwide, while Publix, Food Lion and Harris Teeter operate mostly in the southeast.
Monday, Kroger announced it was buying Harris Teeter for roughly $2.5 billion.
