CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sunday is Mother’s Day, and to honor our mothers, NBC Charlotte spent the week highlighting mothers during the biggest, most exciting and most nerve wrecking moments of motherhood.

Certainly, one of the most anticipated moments is when a mother hears her baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

Toschica Tyree never planned to have a baby.

"This was a surprise for me.  It just happened,” she said.

This Charlotte mom is about to become a mom.

"She’s forty.  This is her first pregnancy and things are going well,” said Tyree’s doctor, Octavia Cannon of Arboretum, OB-GYN.

Cannon calls this pregnancy encouraging for all women trying to get pregnant later in life.

"No it’s not too late.  We’ve got a bag full of tricks, but sometimes all you need is a little grace,” said Cannon.

And patience.

"It’s kind of like trying to catch a goldfish in a bowl when they’re so small,” said Cannon, as she tried to hear the baby’s heartbeat.
