CHARLOTTE, NC -- Neighbors in Charlotte's Yorkmont neighborhood complain that drivers go way too fast down Nations Ford Road, especially just south of South Tryon Street.
"They're in a hurry for nothing. They (act like) this is Shuffletown, like Richard Petty used to ride in the old days," said neighbor Felix Serrano, a father of two. "I've seen people going at least 80 miles per hour out here."
Neighbors say that the stretch of Nations Ford south of South Tryon Street is used as a popular shortcut for drivers heading towards Tyvola Road. The nearby corner of Nations Ford and South Tryon is one of the most dangerous intersections in Charlotte. According to the CDOT, 33,000 cars drive by daily. There were 44 crashes at the intersection between 2008-2011.
"We got kids around here, that's the thing, we got kids," said neighbor Robert McCoy.
Recently, NBC Charlotte monitored many drivers going more than 15 mph over the speed limit. Neighbors hope increased news coverage will deter drivers from speeding.
