Boaters and kayakers at odds over water rights

Lake Wylie boaters and kayakers

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. – On Monday, the Lake Wylie Marine Commission will hold two public meetings to discuss safety concerns in high traffic areas.

The reason is because boaters and kayakers are at odds over the use of the lake.

Boaters say the area near the Whitewater Center and Tail Race Marina is overrun by kayakers, and some of them create problems by just stopping in the middle of the water to sunbathe.

For their part, kayakers say boaters are also causing issues by speeding by, causing huge wakes which are also dangerous.

That's why the commission will hold the meetings to discuss the problems and possible solutions at the Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Lake Wylie on Crowders Cove Lane.

Two plans will be the key topics during the meetings: One plan is to create a "no wake" zone on the marina side near Saddler Island; the other plan could see buoys in the River Point area replaced.
