Boone-based organization gets hands dirty for clean water

Boone-based Wine to Water is opening a new chapter in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There's a unique group of volunteers who travel the world getting their hands dirty so others can have clean water.

When Ed Doughty saw an article about the Boone-based organization Wine to Water, it spoke to him.

"Every 20 seconds a child dies from a water-borne illness and their goal is to eradicate that," Doughty says.

The group's goal is to change communities through the gift of clean water.

"I was beyond impressed," Doughty says.

The organization was started in 2004 and has since traveled the globe with volunteers to help build sustainable sources of clean water. Their volunteers work to make a difference when they're there and once they have left.

"We were able to go out in the communities and give these filters out as well as teach hygiene lessons and clean water lessons," Doughty says. "It's incredibly humbling."

Wine to Water got their name as the organization's Founder Doc Hedley raised the funds for the group while he was bartending. The organization will hold a launch party Thursday for their newest chapter in Charlotte.
