Building goes up in flames in East Charlotte

What is known as an abandoned building went up in flames early Monday morning.

EAST CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A building went up in flames around Monday morning on the intersection of Independence Blvd. and Rockway Drive.

The fire started around 4 a.m. Monday morning. The building is known around the neighborhood to be abandoned.

According to the Charlotte Fire Department 22 firefighters responded to the scene and got the flames under control in 13 minutes.

Firefighters and witnesses say there were heavy flames and smoke billowing out of the building.

A neighbor was woken by a knock at the door telling her to get her kids out of the house. Her children sleep in the room facing the fire, luckily everyone was able to get out okay.

There were no injuries reported from the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
