MATTHEWS, N.C. -- A former employee at a Matthews pediatrician's office faces felony peeping charges.
NewsChannel 36 spoke with Julio Ruiz in June when he was first accused of spying on fellow employees.
"I'm just so sorry," he said. "I mean, I just... It's something I don't understand why I did it. A mistake."
It took officers four months to complete their investigation. They seized Ruiz's computer and cell phone and checked for photographs.
"It was a bit of a lengthy process, doing that -- making sure we were able to go through all the electronic files, looking for photographs," said Stason Tyrrell with Matthews police.
Ruiz is accused of spying on women in the employees' bathroom at Linderman Pediatric Clinic.
At the clinic, the men's and women's bathrooms are side-by-side. Investigators say Ruiz took pictures of his coworkers on his cell phone camera.
"He was able to remove a ceiling tile and take a cell phone camera and move a ceiling tile on the other side just by reaching over the top," Tyrrell said.
Police have been able to identify four victims -- all adults and all employees. Police say parents who brought their children to the clinic should not be worried.
"It had nothing to do with the fact it was a pediatrician's office and nothing to do with children," said Tyrrell.
Ruiz was given a public defender at his first court appearance. He also declined a probable cause hearing, and the next step in the case could be a plea deal.
