Charlotte FD: Fire potential 'extremely high'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Citing lack of rain, the Charlotte area is under an extreme risk of fire, according to a tweet from Charlotte Fire Wednesday evening.

Prior to Sunday's rain, the Charlotte area went 35 consecutive days without rain.

CFD also tweeted that it has canceled all burning permits and prohibited outdoor burning.

In addition to a high risk of fire, air quality has also been a major concern in the area, as EPA issued a "Code Red" for Charlotte Wednesday morning. On the same day, Mecklenburg County later issued an alert forecasting that Thursday is expected to reach Code Orange, with regards to air quality in the area.

Earlier Wednesday, Charlotte fire came in assistance with firefighting efforts near Lake Lure.
