CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A local Charlotte boy has become one of the "Nicest Kids in Town," as he danced his way onto to cast of NBC's Hairspray Live!
Sam Faulkner, 18, will be dancing and singing alongside an all-star cast including Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Martin Short, Derek Hough, and Rosie O’Donnell, among others.
Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, "Hairspray Live!" takes place in 1962 Baltimore. Plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on "The Corny Collins Show," a local TV program. When against all odds Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African American boy she meets in detention, Seaweed; and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy's mother is the indomitable Edna, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white "Corny Collins Show."
Faulkner was born and raised in Charlotte where he began performing at age nine, according to his personal website. He has performed in over 20 regional productions in Charlotte and starred in the role of Billy in Billy Elliot the Musical in two different productions at the Ogunquit Playhouse and North Carolina Theatre. During his time playing Billy, Faulkner received his Equity Card at the young age of 15. Faulkner even got the chance to play Billy in front of former President George H. W. Bush.
Sam dances at the Charlotte local Miller Street Dance Academy. He previously held the title of Teen Mr. Dance of North Carolina 2013-2014, and was recently named the new Mr. Dance of America 2015-2016, where he also won the Interview, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Acro, and Congeniality awards.
