Chester County sheriff faces harassment suit

CHESTER, S.C. (AP) - A deputy is suing the Chester County sheriff, saying he sexually harassed her, then passed her over for a promotion.

Sheriff's Capt. Mary Anne Tolbert filed the lawsuit last week. She says Sheriff Alex Underwood coerced her into having sex several places across the county, including his own home, for most of last year. When the sex stopped, Tolbert said Underwood criticized her work in front of others.

Underwood said in a statement to local media outlets the allegations are completely false and he looks forward to vigorously defending himself in court.

Underwood was elected sheriff in 2012. Since taking office, he has been sued by the county after trying to keep the 911 center under his control and was accused of scuffling with firefighters at a wreck.
