Girl, 9, struck by vehicle in NW Charlotte

A little girl is in critical condition after being hit by a car in northwest Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating after a child was struck by a car in northwest Charlotte.

Right at 6 p.m., officers were called to Rozzelles Ferry Road and Dunn Commons Parkway on reports that a child riding a bicycle had been struck by a vehicle.

NBC Charlotte's crew on scene says a 9-year-old girl was crossing the street with her mother-- on foot-- when she was hit by a red sedan.

MEDIC transported the child to CMC with injuries police describe to be potentially life threatening.

Police say speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident, and no citations have been issued.

More information is forthcoming as police continue their investigation.

Motorists should avoid the area, as the road will be closed while police conduct their investigation.

An earlier version of this story stated the child was riding a bicycle when she was struck by a vehicle. That information was supplied by CMPD, and police have since issued updated information.
