The family of a man killed in a west Charlotte hit-and-run is asking the suspect to turn themselves in.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police in west Charlotte are investigating after a man was killed in a hit-and-run on Freedom Drive late Sunday.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to a reported hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in the 3900 block of Freedom Drive around 11:30 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying in the left lane. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

On Tuesday 53-year-old Jerry Lynn Helms was identified as the driver of the Honda Pilot involved in the hit-and-run. CMPD with the assistance of Lancaster and Chester County Sheriff Departments has arrested and charged Helms with Felony Hit-and-Run.

Detectives said a witness told officers at the scene that a white SUV ran the red light on Ashley Road and turned left onto Freedom before striking the pedestrian. The witness said the SUV continued driving and was last seen on I-85 south.

Family members identified the victim as Malcom Thomas Cherry.

"My brother, he was just a quiet, laid back person that would do anything for anybody if he had the opportunity," said the victim's sister. "It's just painful right now. It's just painful."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
