CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a murder after a pregnant woman was found dead inside a south Charlotte apartment Tuesday night.
Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call around 11 p.m on Seneca Place. Upon arrival, they located 20-year-old Donsha Seren Rankin suffering from a gunshot wound. Rankin was pronounced dead by MEDIC on the scene.
Police said there were people inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. Police also said the victim and suspect were known to one another.
Neighbors say Rankin had a young son and was pregnant with a new baby girl.
“I had asked her about, you know, being pregnant, and she had said she was five months and she just found out the sex of her baby yesterday, so it was just unfortunate,” said Trava Chapman who lives in the complex.
Chapman says she often saw Rankin around the complex with another woman, who she says was her best friend. Chapman said Rankin and the woman’s children played together.
According to the CMPD incident report, an A-R 15 rifle with magazine rounds was found inside the apartment where the shooting took place but did not say if that was the gun used.
Police have not said who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but do say they’re investigating the shooting as a murder. As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.
