Community holds BBQ to for officer battling cancer

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A barbecue fundraiser was held on Main Street in Rock Hill Friday to help Lt. Joe Johnson of Rock Hill Police.

Johnson is battling bone cancer and the money raised will help pay for expenses not covered by insurance.

"It's absolutely amazing. I couldn't believe the community was going to come together this much for me," Johnson said. "It's just amazing."

Dozens of firefighters, sheriff deputies and fellow officers came by to buy a plate and make a donation.

Carol Harvey Hughes works in City Hall and helped organize the event.

"This community loves him, and he loves us," Hughes said. "As I was coming out of City Hall, I was telling this young lady and she gave me $20 to give to Joe... We just love him so."

Johnson has finished with chemotherapy and radiation. He hopes to return to work sometime this summer.

Donations can still be accepted. Anyone interested can contact the Rock Hill Police Department.
