Community, police fear mail theft during holidays

This holiday season is a hectic experience for shoppers, but it's also a busy time for thieves who target mailboxes to snatch store gift cards and cash gifts.

GASTONIA, N.C. -- This holiday season is a hectic experience for shoppers, but it's also a busy time for thieves who target mailboxes to snatch store gift cards and cash gifts.

Gastonia Police are investigating one case where a man says someone stole a $100 gift card from his mailbox and used it at a local Walmart.

The U.S. Postal Service reports 10,000 people are arrested every year for stealing mail.

Because so many mailboxes can be easily accessed, there's really no foolproof way to protect your mail. But the website GiftCards.com said people who buy gift cards for loved ones should keep their activation receipt to possibly get a new one.
