County budget allows full-time nurses in every CMS school

County budget allows full-time nurses in CMS

DAVIDSON, N.C. — When Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools begin on August 25th, there will be more people taking care of students.
For the first time, CMS will assign a full-time school nurse to every school. It's part of the new county budget.

"Now we have a nurse to look after the kids instead of a secretary frantically running around trying to do everything," said Shelley Notte, a parent at Davidson Elementary School.

Jen Sidden said the new staffing will mean better care for all students, including students who don't have regular health care providers.

"For them, the school nurse may be the first line of health care access and it's critical to supply them with healthcare resources that they need," said Sidden.

The new measure is the result of a grass roots effort by parents who wanted full time school nurses.

The CDC recommends a nurse for every 750 students. CMS will now hire 33 additional school nurses, bringing the system's ratio closer to the CDC recommendations.
