LANCASTER, S.C. -- The Lancaster County Animal Shelter is temporarily closed after a deadly virus was discovered that has affected some of the animals.
The shelter, located at 118 Kennel Lane, is closed until further notice. A sign posted to the fence of the parking lot says they are "closed for cleaning."
The virus has affected some of the dogs at the shelter, including some that have been adopted in the past month.
The shelter manager told NBC Charlotte a clinic in Monroe confirmed the virus as distemper, which is similar to a bad cold for dogs.
Two dogs have been euthanized since the virus was discovered in the shelter. One dog was put down Tuesday and another on May 1.
Dogs that remain in the shelter have been moved to quarantine to prevent them from getting sick.
