Deputy shot in Rutherford County

A Sheriff Deputy in Rutherford County has been shot just a day after Shelby Officer Tim Brackeen was laid to rest.

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- A Sheriff's Deputy has been shot in Rutherfordton, according to officials.

Saturday morning police responded to a possible suicidal person with a gun on Monfredo Street. According to the Rutherfordton Police Department, ultimately the resident fired his weapon and police officers returned the fire. The resident was struck and died at the scene.

During the gunfire exchange, Rutherford County Deputy Patrick Wiseman was hit. Officials say he has been transported to a local trauma center with non-life threatening injuries. At this time, early reports indicate he is in stable condition.

"At this time we ask for prayers for the injured Sheriff Detective Patrick Wiseman, all of the other officers at the scene, and the family of the deceased," said the Rutherfordton Police Department.

Officials say the crime scene and investigation has been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of investigation.
