Driver hospitalized after tree smashes into Corvette

One witness says it was nothing short of a miracle that the driver had survived.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Strong storms knocked trees to the ground Sunday.

A massive tree that appears to have been struck by lightning, tipped over onto a moving car. Multiple emergency units responded to the scene on West Sugar Creek Road and Conner Ridge Lane.

"They pulled (the driver) out the back," says neighbor Elizabeth Beam.

Beam watched closely.

"My mind went I hope he's okay, I hope he's okay."

Praying for the best, yet preparing for the worst. Beam says what she witnessed was nothing short of a miracle.

"There was a gentleman that had stopped and come up to talk to him and asked if he was okay and then I heard his voice and I was very relieved."

The black Corvette was completely crushed. Medic says the man behind the wheel suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

"Speculation is that perhaps he heard the tree coming down and probably lowered himself below because the tree is on the driver seat so it was only the Lord that kept him," says neighbor Alice Beam.
