Second suspect charged in west Charlotte shooting

CMPD said a man died after being shot during a drug deal that led to a shootout in west Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have made a second arrest in connection with a fatal shooting at west Charlotte gas station.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, investigators responded to a shooting at the Exxon gas station in the 3200 block of Queen City Drive around 9:30 p.m. on June 9.

Cornelius Chambers, 32, has been charged with murder and armed robbery related to the homicide of Cornelius Drayton. Last week, detectives charged 24-year-old Lex Chilsolm with armed robbery and murder in connection with Drayton's death. Investigators said Chisolm and Drayton knew each other.

Investigators said three people were inside a Honda Accord when an altercation took place between them and another group before shots were fired. Police said the driver of the Honda drove off, initiating a chase between two cars that resulted in gunfire being exchanged between both vehicles.

The driver of the Honda Accord went on to Gaston County and stopped at the Kangaroo Express located at 6441 Wilkinson Boulevard. Belmont Police Department Officers and Gaston County EMS responded to that location where they found all three occupants of this vehicle, two of which had been shot at some point during this incident.

Eric Short was walking into the Belmont Kangaroo gas station when he said he saw the car pull up, and one of the victims get out.

"You can see he's got blood all over his chest," Short said. "He made it behind the car by the trunk before he collapsed."

He said a second passenger got out of the car before he also collapsed.

Short said he and several others tried to help the men before paramedics arrived.

"They had rolls of paper towels there," Short said. "I was just stringing them off, handing them to them."

After police and paramedics arrived, Short began broadcasting on Facebook Live. His video now has almost 30,000 views.

"I drove home, and I was still shaking," he said. "[I have to] try to find a way to cope with the situation and get sleep at night."

Both victims were taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia and were treated for life-threatening injuries. One of the victims, identified as 37-year-old Cornelius Drayton, died as a result of his injuries.

The driver was not injured and has been transported to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to be interviewed.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.
