Registered sex offender arrested again

A Gaston County man, who has a long history of sex offenses, is back behind bars.

GASTONIA, N.C. -- A Gaston County man with a long history as a registered sex offender has been arrested again.

Stephan Leon White was arrested Tuesday by Gastonia Police and charged with indecent exposure after police say he committed a lewd act at the Target parking lot on Cox Road.

"It's sad these days that you have to worry about things like that," said Rebecca Denton who as shopping at the same Target store today.

White was first put on the sex offender database in July 2013, when he exposed himself to a 13-year-old girl in a Walmart parking lot also in Gaston County.

He was also charged with doing the same thing to a 38-year-old woman in the same parking lot two weeks earlier.

Then in February 2015, he was convicted of using social media, something sex offenders are barred from doing.

In April 2016, police picked him up for being too close to a child daycare center.

His record shows two of his charges were dismissed with no reason given and he served his complete prison sentences on two other charges.

He was out of jail on probation when he was arrested yesterday at the Target store.

Another shopper today, Jeffrey Jones said, "We got to do something about that. I got three kids and I am sure a lot of families shop at this Target and it is unfortunate what is going on."

Even as police could be seen patrolling around the parking lot today, Rebecca Denton said as she loaded bags into her car, that she looks out for herself.

"It's why I think I park so far off because I don't have cars around and I can see if somebody is coming," she said.

White is being held on half a million dollars bond at the Gaston County jail.
