Girl, 1, dies in Lincolnton crash

LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- A couple's 1-year-old child was killed Friday when their vehicle was struck from behind as they slowed to a stop for a funeral procession.

Friday afternoon around 3, the Lincolnton Police Department says a 2006 Chevy Equinox driven by Silas Hart, of Lincolnton, was traveling southbound on South Generals Boulevard when it was struck from behind by a 2014 Chevy Silverado driven by William "Karey" Jones, II, of Bessemer City.

Police say Hart was slowing down to move onto the shoulder for a funeral procession when the crash occurred.

Hart's wife and 1-year-old  child were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The child, Jaylah Kassidy Hart, was taken to the hospital then airlifted to Levine Children's Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

Hart's wife received minor injuries in the crash.

Police say charges in the case are pending and the investigation is ongoing.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the Hart family with funeral costs.
