Heavy rains cause sanitary sewer spill

MONROE, N.C. -- City officials in Monroe say heavy rains led to more than 8500 gallons of wastewater seeping out into Richardson Creek.

On Monday, flooding led to 8700 gallons of wastewater to seep into a branch of Richardson Creek at Wolf Pond and Marvin Watkins in Monroe.

City officials say aging infrastructure and broken sanitary sewer cleanouts in customer yards may have led to excess rainwater making its way into and overtaxing the sanitary sewer system.

Authorities continued they believe the majority of the 8700 gallons was rainwater and not untreated wastewater.

The City encourages citizens to repair any damaged white sewer cleanout caps in their yards, and to report any sanitary sewer overflow problems to the Water Resources Department at (704) 282-4601.
