Infant boy abandoned at Newberry hospital

Newberry, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina social services officials say someone abandoned a baby at Newberry County Memorial Hospital over the weekend.

The infant was born on November 25, and was left the next day at the hospital under the protection of safe haven with medical officials. Social services officials say because the child was unharmed, this falls under the jurisdiction of 'Daniel's Law', meaning the person won't face prosecution.

The child, an African-American boy, weighed 7 pounds 7.1 ounces at birth. He's now in DSS custody.

A hearing will be held to determine where he'll go next on January 25 at 1:30 p.m. at the Newberry Family Court on College Street. Anyone wished to assert parental rights should go to that hearing.
