Irwin Avenue Elementary placed on brief lockdown Tuesday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police activity forced a Charlotte elementary school to be placed under a brief lockdown Tuesday morning.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the VCAT unit was attempting to serve a warrant on a robbery suspect in the 200 block of North Clarkson Street. As a precaution, Irwin Elementary School was placed on lockdown due to CMPD's proximity to the campus.

Police say the suspect surrendered to authorities without incident after barricading himself inside a home. The suspect has been identified as Delmont Cunningham.

Cunningham is a suspect in the armed robbery of a residence last week off Sugar Creek Road.

The lockdown was lifted at approximately 10:45, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
