Keeping cool on a budget this summer

Summer is finally here, which means the summer heat is on. But there are plenty of kid-friendly ways to cool off across the Queen City.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s official!

Summer is finally here, which means the summer heat is, too. But no need to sweat, because the Queen City has plenty of kid-friendly fun to cool off without spending a lot. Charlotte’s keeping your kids cool with dozens of free splash pads all over the city, with most of them being free or under $10.

Romare Bearden Park is a favorite free one, right in the center of uptown, or splash on over to Latta Park — just down the road in Dilworth.

“It’s so refreshing,” says Sarah Galley, a Charlotte Montessori School teacher. “We stand outside in the afternoons and in the morning, and it’s so muggy, and coming down here, it’s just nice, because they can cool off and really enjoy themselves, and then they nap really well later on.”

If you really want to make a splash for just under $10, take the plunge at Rays Splash Planet. Live in Mecklenburg County, and it’s just $6 for kids 17 and under.

All easy and affordable ways to beat the heat this summer in the Queen City.
