Large tree falls along east Charlotte road

It will take hours to clear a large tree that fell in east Charlotte early Friday morning knocking out power to the neighborhood.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Derrick Crawford looked on as work crew moved branches and debris away from the street near his house Friday morning.

Crawford says he's lived on Plott road in East Charlotte for the past 17 years.

"It was about 3:30, 4 o'clock and I heard a loud crash," said Crawford, explaining the moment a huge tree fell near his home. "when I walked out, I saw this tree in the road."

Crawford and dozens of others in the area were without power when power lines and a traffic light at the intersection of Plott Road and Robinson Church Road came crashing down.

"About 30 minutes later, I heard a car run right into the tree," Crawford said. "He was shaken, but he wasn't that hurt."

"The beautiful trees and established neighborhood where part of the reason I moved here. I understand that we will get rain storms and ice storms and that causes damaged. But it's worth dealing with because of this is such a great place to live."
