Man barricaded inside Albemarle home after police chase

Police in Albemarle said a man barricaded himself inside a home after leading police on a chase Tuesday.

ALBEMARLE, N.C. – A standoff with Albemarle Police ended early Wednesday morning after a man barricaded himself inside a home following a police chase.

According to Albemarle Police, officers received a request for assistance from Cabarrus County stemming from an incident that occurred in Cabarrus County earlier Tuesday night. 

When police arrived at a home on Snotherly Street, the suspect, identified as Robert Baucom, drive by in his truck. After he was stopped by officers, police said Baucom led officers on a chase around town before driving back to the home. Baucom then exited the vehicle carrying an assault rifle, according to officers. 

Shortly after entering the home, Baucom reportedly fired several dozen shots at police, striking patrol cars at least 34 times. No officers were injured during the standoff. 

The standoff ended shortly after midnight when a robot was sent inside the home. Baucom was found inside the home suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Albemarle Police.
