CMPD charges man with murder after one found dead in north Charlotte home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have charged a man with murder after a person was found dead in a north Charlotte home Friday. 

Jeffvory Hughey, 36, was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and shooting into an occupied property in connection with the death of Jonathan Vereen. 

Police responded Friday morning to an assault with deadly weapon call on Hubbard Road in the University City Division.

Upon arrival, officials say they located a man, identified as Jonathan Vereen, 35, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Vereen was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC.

According to CMPD, Hughey turned himself into police where he was interviewed by detectives at headquarters. He was arrested following his interview and was taken to the hospital for a medical condition. Police say he'll be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office after he is released from the hospital.
