Man walking to gas station hit and killed

State troopers have identified the man hit and killed while trying to cross a highway in Gaston County Friday.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A man walking along the side of the highway after his car ran out of gas was hit and killed early Friday morning.

The accident happened around 3:45 a.m. along Kings Mountain Highway at Bunker Hill Road. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Jimmie Gene Mellon Jr., of Crouse.

NBC Charlotte talked to the victim's friend. He says they ran out of gas and they were walking along the highway to a gas station. The man says his friend was hit by a truck when they attempted to cross the highway.

"He was there and then he was gone," the victim's friend said.  "It took me a few minutes to locate him. I got on 911, contacted them, and they calmed me down because at first, I was a little hysterical. And then I located him and performed CPR as best I could until EMS got here."

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating, but say the driver of the truck will not face charges.  The victim's name has not been released at this time.

NBC Charlotte obtained 911 calls made by the driver of the truck and Mellon's friend.

"I think I just hit somebody with my mirror of my truck," the truck driver told a 911 operator. "They were walking in the dark here."

The truck driver starts to get emotional.

"Please Lord, let this person be okay," he said.

When Mellon's friend called 911, he's instructed to perform CPR on him.

"Oh lord, let him be okay!" Mellon's friend said.
