Man killed in single car crash in Gastonia

GASTONIA, N.C. -- Emergency crews extricated a man after he hit two trees in Gastonia.The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday on Davidson Avenue near Cloverdale Circle.

Tony Scott Tyler Lewis, 19, was taken to Caromount Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Lewis was driving a 1997 Honda Accord. It was the only vehicle involved.

Police say speed likely contributed to the crash. Lewis left the road in front of Rhyne Elementary School, struck the trees, and then overturned, according to investigators. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, Gastonia Police say.
