Massive fire that engulfed mill in Granite Falls, now under control

New details of the massive warehouse fire in Caldwell County.

GRANITE FALLS, N.C. - All 16 fire departments in Caldwell County and several from Catawba and Burke Counties worked together to take down a massive warehouse fire in Granite Falls.

The fire broke out on Friday at the Old Shuford Mill on Falls Avenue around 7:15 p.m., directly across the road from Granite Falls Police Department. The warehouse sits on a 19 acre property and firefighters were able to save five buildings that surround the warehouse.

The Granite Falls Fire Department is continuing to contain the fire within the walls of the warehouse but it is still smoldering.

The warehouse is being rented out for storage units.

Granite Falls Town Manager Jerry Church says several surrounding neighborhoods have been evacuated due to the heat from the fire.

The Granite Falls Recreation Center, the Granite Falls Drug Center and the Granite Falls Town Offices are open to serve as cooling centers for residents.

Several firefighters were treated on the scene for heat related conditions Friday night.

As crews battle the flames, it is too early to determine what may have caused the inferno. Investigators say it will likely be up to a week before the interior will cool down enough to begin investigation into what started the fire

The American Red Cross was also on the scene providing a rehab center for fire fighters.
