Local police warn of phishing scam

Police say people are getting emails disguised as coming from the town or the police department and asks the email recipient to pay an invoice that's overdue.

MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Matthews Police are putting people on alert about an online phishing scam.

Police say people are getting emails disguised as coming from the town or the police department and asks the email recipient to pay an invoice that's overdue.

Matthews Police are instructing people to not click that link. Police also said they would never email people about money being owed.

If you receive one of these scam emails, you're asked to call Matthews Town Hall at 704-847-4411.
